Khadija “Bunny” Shaw continued her impressive UEFA Women’s Champions League scoring record Wednesday, rescuing Manchester City with a second-half equalizer in a 1-1 draw against Real Madrid at the Joie Stadium.

Shaw struck six minutes after halftime to erase Linda Caicedo’s first-half opener, leaving both teams with two points from their opening two league-phase matches.

Madrid make the early breakthrough

Real Madrid began aggressively, but City created the first major opportunity when Mary Fowler met Alex Greenwood’s free-kick with a header that crashed against the underside of the crossbar inside the opening nine minutes.

Shaw then tested Madrid goalkeeper Merle Frohms with a header as the hosts continued to threaten.

Madrid, however, found the breakthrough in the 29th minute.

Caicedo accelerated down the right before cutting loose with a low shot that found the far corner, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead at halftime.

Shaw restores parity

City emerged from the interval with greater urgency and were rewarded in the 51st minute.

Yui Hasegawa won possession and fed Shaw, who turned sharply before calmly placing her finish into the far corner.

The goal was Shaw’s eighth in 11 Champions League appearances and further strengthened her status as Manchester City’s all-time leading scorer in the competition.

With the game increasingly stretched, both teams went in search of the winner.

Substitute Beth Mead narrowly missed putting City ahead with a header, while goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita produced important saves to prevent Madrid from regaining the lead.

Late drama but no winner

Madrid appeared to have found the decisive goal when Silvia Cristóbal put the ball in the net late in the contest.

The effort was disallowed, however, after referee Silvia Gasperotti had already stopped play for an infringement involving Mead.

City pushed forward again during the closing stages, but neither side could produce the finish required to claim all three points.

City turn focus to Arsenal

The draw gives Manchester City two points from two league-phase matches after they also drew 1-1 away to Bayern Munich in their opening fixture.

Andrée Jeglertz’s team will now return their attention to domestic competition, with Arsenal scheduled to visit the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, October 4.
