Schools in Broward County get high scores on Florida's newest academic assessment

On Florida's most recent academic assessment, students from Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) outperformed the state average, according to the results released on Thursday.

The results were from the Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) test, which is a progress monitoring assessment given three times a year for mathematics and English Language Arts (ELA).

Overall, the results show Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) has made progress and has received high scores in the majority of tested areas for FAST.

FAST is administered in three phases. Based on the third and final assessment of FAST in the spring of 2023, results show that BCPS students:

  • Scored higher than the state average in 11 out of 14 tested areas and grade levels – and tied with the state average in one area

  • Made significant gains in Math and ELA in every grade level, compared to the first two administrations of FAST.

Reports are that also that results for the state’s End of Course exams for Biology, Civics, U.S. History, Algebra, and Geometry were also released, in addition to the Statewide Science Assessments for grades 5 and 8.

  • Grade 5 Science – BCPS students improved 2 percentage points in 2023 to 46% of students scoring on grade level or above, compared to the previous year.

  • Grade 8 Science and Biology – BCPS maintained the percent of students scoring on grade level or above (47%), compared to the prior year. Scores also tied with the state average.

  • End of Course Exams in Biology – BCPS students improved 4 percentage points in 2023 to 62% of students scoring on grade level or above, compared to the previous year.

Results for Algebra and Geometry cannot be compared to previous school years because the assessments are new for 2022/23. Overall scores reveal:

  • 51% of BCPS students scored on grade level or above in Algebra 1.

  • 47% of BCPS students scored on grade level or above Geometry.
