Sangster International Airport (SIA) has been upgraded to Level 3 of the Airports Council International (ACI) Airport Carbon Accreditation programme, marking a significant milestone in the airport's environmental sustainability efforts.

MBJ Airports Limited, the operator of the airport, announced the achievement, describing it as recognition of the airport's commitment to reducing carbon emissions through collaboration with airlines, ground handlers, tenants, and other on-site stakeholders.

Level 3 accreditation requires airports to move beyond managing their own emissions and demonstrate that they are actively engaging partners across the airport community in a coordinated approach to carbon reduction.

The announcement comes shortly after World Environment Day, observed globally on June 5, and reflects what MBJ says is a growing emphasis on sustainability as a core part of the airport's long-term strategy.

Shane Munroe, chief executive officer of MBJ Airports Limited, said the accreditation reflects years of work to build a culture of environmental responsibility throughout the organisation.

“This accreditation affirms what our team has worked tirelessly to build — a culture of environmental responsibility that extends into everything that we do,” Munroe said. “For us, sustainability is a core value that is embedded in how we plan, operate, and partner with every stakeholder at Sangster International Airport.”

He added that the airport remains committed to further strengthening its environmental performance and setting higher standards for sustainable airport operations across the Caribbean.

The achievement was also recognised by Airports Council International–Latin America and Caribbean (ACI-LAC), which commended the airport for reaching the milestone.

“Reaching Level 3 is a significant achievement, demonstrating the airport’s commitment to engaging stakeholders in the collective effort to reduce carbon emissions,” said Francisco M. Medela Alonso, Industry Affairs Director at ACI-LAC.

The Airport Carbon Accreditation programme is administered by Environmental Minds and is regarded as one of the aviation industry's leading frameworks for carbon management.

Sangster International Airport also holds ISO 14001 certification, the internationally recognised standard for environmental management systems. MBJ said the combination of certifications strengthens the airport’s position as a regional leader in sustainable airport operations and environmental stewardship.

The airport serves as Jamaica’s primary gateway for tourism and is one of the busiest airports in the Caribbean.
