Sammy sees India series as World Cup qualifying audition

West Indies head coach Daren Sammy sees the upcoming three-match One-Day International (ODI) series against India as a crucial measuring stick for a team preparing for a much bigger assignment, the 2027 ICC World Cup Qualifiers.

The first ODI is set for Sunday, when the West Indies will begin its bid to end a 24-year wait for a series victory in India.

But beyond the result, Sammy wants the three matches to reveal just how close his side is to competing with the world's best in the white-ball format.

Measuring up against the No. 1 team

India presents the kind of challenge Sammy believes his players need at this stage of their preparation.

The hosts are the world's top-ranked ODI side, and facing them on their home ground gives the West Indies an opportunity to test its progress under conditions that will demand discipline and adaptability.

“This is a great opportunity against the number one team in the world. It’s been 24 years we haven’t won a series here in India, so it’s a great opportunity for us as a team to come out here and challenge ourselves and measure up ourselves as to where we’re at in One Day cricket,” Sammy said.

For Sammy, the significance extends well beyond the three-match series.

He sees beating India in India as a useful indication of whether the West Indies can eventually challenge for major white-ball honors.

“If you have to win a major ICC event, especially in the white ball format, you have to beat India, and playing them here at home in their conditions and performing well and winning gives us a fair idea as to what we can do as a team and how capable we are in competing on the world stage and heading into the Qualifiers in February.”

Qualifiers remain the priority

Whatever happens against India, the West Indies still faces the critical task of securing its place at the 2027 World Cup, which will be staged in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

The regional side must navigate the Qualifiers beginning next February to earn its place in the tournament.

That makes the current series an important final stage of preparation rather than an isolated international assignment.

“That is our number one focus: continuing to fine-tune the team so that when we go to the Qualifiers, we put ourselves in the position to book our ticket to South Africa,” Sammy said.

The India matches could therefore provide Sammy and his coaching staff with valuable information about combinations, roles and the players best equipped to carry the campaign into February.

No passengers in 15-man squad

With this series representing the West Indies' final ODI engagement of the year, and potentially its last before the Qualifiers, Sammy intends to use all three matches to examine the full squad.

Every member of the 15-man group is expected to get an opportunity.

The approach is designed to give the coaching staff a clearer picture of the personnel and combinations that could form the core of the Qualifiers squad.

“We want to give everybody an opportunity during those three games ... everybody will be getting an opportunity because this is our last ODI series of the year and looking at our schedule going into the Qualifiers, we may not have another ODI series, so this last test against India is very important in the general context of things to see where we’re at,” Sammy said.

That opportunity comes against an opponent capable of exposing weaknesses quickly.

For Sammy, that is precisely the point.

The West Indies enter the series with the immediate target of challenging India, but the larger objective is to emerge from the three matches with a clearer understanding of what must be fixed, which combinations can be trusted and how competitive the team can be when the stakes rise in February.

The India series, in that sense, is not simply the end of the West Indies' ODI year.

It could be the final major examination before the road to the 2027 World Cup becomes a qualification fight.
