Windies hold their nerve when the pressure intensifies
The victory was not achieved through a straightforward chase.
With Sri Lanka applying pressure, West Indies needed key contributions from their middle order, and Sherfane Rutherford, Rovman Powell, and Jason Holder delivered when it mattered most.
Their efforts guided the hosts over the line after Sri Lanka had fought back into the contest.
Sammy was particularly impressed by the way the batters handled the tense moments.
“I wasn’t too nervous, I was just hoping that they get over the line, but today it was a lot more thoughtful and smart cricket, especially by Rovman and Sherfane and followed by Jason Holder,” Sammy said.
Joseph’s breakthrough spell sets the tone
Before the chase began, the foundation of the win had already been laid by the bowling attack.
Fast bowler Shamar Joseph produced a sensational performance, claiming his first five-wicket haul in T20 internationals and disrupting Sri Lanka’s batting plans.
Sammy praised Joseph’s continued development and impact.
“I think the game was set up at front when we bowled, and Shamar Joseph continues to impress,” he said.
The young pacer’s performance provided the momentum West Indies needed before the decisive batting effort.
A win that ends a lengthy wait
The series victory marked West Indies’ first home T20I bilateral series success since August 2024, when they swept South Africa 3-0.
Sammy admitted the achievement carried extra importance after the team’s recent challenges and the broader goal of preparing for future international competitions.
“We needed the victory. It’s been a while since we won a T20I series at home…so I’m glad that we could finish this series on a high,” he said.
Building toward the future
Beyond the immediate celebration, Sammy views the series win as another step in shaping a stronger West Indies side ahead of major upcoming challenges, including preparations for the 2028 T20 World Cup in Australia.
“Getting a series win after almost two years is something to be proud of, especially after a World Cup and building for Australia 2028,” he said.
The head coach emphasized that continued progress will require the right combination of players, skills, and adaptability.
“We now have to put things together; skillsets, players to match the conditions,” Sammy said.
“But most of all being under pressure today and having the nerve and the calm and the cricket smarts to do what it takes to come over the line, that was special.”
The series win gave West Indies more than just a trophy.
It provided evidence that the team is developing the composure and game awareness needed to succeed in high-pressure moments, exactly the qualities Sammy believes will drive their next chapter.
