The Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis has officially broken ground on a new cruise terminal development at Port Zante, a major infrastructure project aimed at positioning the twin-island federation as a regional cruise home-porting destination.
The ceremony took place on July 1, 2026, and was led by the St. Christopher Air & Sea Ports Authority (SCASPA), marking the start of what officials describe as a transformative investment in the country’s tourism sector.
The new terminal is a central part of the government’s strategy to modernise port infrastructure, strengthen tourism competitiveness, and expand economic opportunities linked to cruise arrivals.
Purpose-built to support home-porting operations, the facility will allow passengers to begin and end their cruises in Saint Kitts and Nevis, moving the destination beyond its traditional role as a port of call. Officials say the shift is expected to boost visitor spending, increase overnight stays, improve airlift demand, and generate wider economic benefits for local businesses.
The development will include modern passenger processing systems, advanced security and baggage screening technology, and upgraded immigration facilities designed to streamline arrivals and departures.
Speaking at the ceremony, SCASPA Chief Executive Officer Adeola Moore said the project represents a key step in upgrading national infrastructure to meet future demand.
“This project reflects SCASPA’s commitment to investing in facilities that are modern, efficient, resilient, and future-ready,” she said. “Once completed, the terminal will significantly enhance the guest arrival and departure experience through improved passenger processing, state-of-the-art security and baggage screening systems, and modern immigration technologies comparable to those at the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport.”
Tourism Minister Marsha Henderson said the initiative marks a turning point for the country’s tourism industry and broader economic outlook.
“This new cruise terminal represents vision, partnership, innovation and confidence in the future of Saint Kitts and Nevis as one of the Caribbean’s premier cruise destinations,” she said. “Today, we take a bold step beyond being a port of call as we position Saint Kitts and Nevis to becoming a transit port, joining the likes of Antigua and Barbados.”
She added that cruise home-porting will open new opportunities for increased visitor spending, higher hotel occupancy, stronger air connectivity, and greater participation by local businesses across the tourism value chain.
“This project is far more than an investment in infrastructure. It is an investment in our people, our businesses, and the long-term prosperity of our nation,” she said.
Henderson also confirmed that preparations for home-porting operations remain on track for November 2027. She noted that P&O Cruises has reported strong booking activity for cruises departing from Saint Kitts, while regional and local travel advisor sales programmes are being finalised.
The government said the project underscores its commitment to modern infrastructure, sustainable tourism development, and strengthening Saint Kitts and Nevis’ position as a leading cruise destination in the Caribbean.
