Romaine Beckford, the reigning National high jump champion and NACAC U-23 champion, marked a successful debut as an Arkansas Razorback by clinching victory at the Arkansas Invitational on the weekend.

The former standout athlete from South Plains College and the University of South Florida showcased his exceptional high jump skills in this competition.

In a thrilling showdown, Beckford found himself in a tense battle with teammate Kason O’Riley. The competition intensified as both athletes cleared the bar at 2.16 meters, with O’Riley managing the previous height of 2.11 meters on his first attempt. Beckford, on the other hand, required three attempts before successfully clearing the same height.

Ultimately, Beckford secured the victory by clearing 2.19 meters on his third attempt, while three unsuccessful tries at 2.22 meters followed. As a testament to his accomplishment, Beckford celebrated with his signature backflip on the high jump mat, drawing cheers from the enthusiastic crowd of 1,418 spectators.

High jump sensation

This triumph follows Beckford's impressive track record, including winning the NCAA Outdoor title with a remarkable 2.27-meter clearance while competing for the University of South Florida. He further solidified his reputation by capturing the National title with a 2.23-meter jump and claiming the NACAC U-23 championship with a 2.21-meter clearance.

The 21-year-old athlete also represented his nation on the global stage, participating in the World Championships in Budapest, where he finished 11th in his qualifying group, achieving a best clearance of 2.22 meters.

Beckford's victory at the Arkansas Invitational serves as a promising start to his journey as an Arkansas Razorback and reaffirms his status as a high jump sensation in the world of athletics.
