Reggae Boyz eye Copa America spot in CONCACAF Nations League

Heimir Hallgrimsson, the head coach of Jamaica’s Senior Men’s Football team, known as the Reggae Boyz, is setting his sights on progress in the CONCACAF Nations League and the opportunities it can bring.

He made this clear when announcing the 23-man squad for the upcoming CONCACAF Nations League A, Group B matches against Grenada and Haiti.

Currently, Jamaica leads Group B with four points, following a 1-0 win over Honduras and a 2-2 draw against Haiti. Cuba also has four points, with Honduras on three, Haiti on two, and Suriname and Grenada on one point each. All teams have played two games.

Hallgrimsson emphasized the importance of reaching the playoffs for various reasons, including the opportunity to compete in the semi-finals and potentially the final of the Nations League, which could lead to participation in the Copa America next summer. He views these opportunities as crucial for the team’s growth and development, with an eye on qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Boyz could set quarter-final date with Canada or Costa Rica

If the Reggae Boyz secure victory in their upcoming matches and maintain their position atop Group B, they will advance to the quarter-finals, where they will face either Canada or Costa Rica. If they finish as runners-up, they will face Mexico or the US for a chance to participate in the Copa America Tournament scheduled for June 20 to July 14 next year in the US.

As part of the squad selection, 31-year-old Michael Hector, representing Charlton Athletic, was recalled. Hallgrimsson expressed his desire to see Hector in Action and believes he can contribute to the team immediately, even though he may not be considered a long-term prospect.

However, Brentford’s Ethan Pinnock, a standout player for the Reggae Boyz, was not included due to a recurring Achilles injury, even though he represented his club in the English Premier League on Saturday. The club is using the FIFA window to provide him with rest and treatment for the injury.

Teenager Dujuan Richards was also absent from the squad, with Hallgrimsson citing his lack of regular playing time and lower fitness level as reasons for his exclusion.

The squad does include a first-time invitee, 19-year-old midfielder Karoy Anderson from Charlton Athletic. The coaching staff is excited about Anderson’s inclusion and views him as a promising box-to-box midfielder who can make a valuable contribution.
