Quaker Oats recalls more products due to health concerns

The Quaker Oats Company has taken the precautionary step of expanding its product recall due to potential salmonella contamination. 

This decision, which comes after the initial recall in December, aims to ensure the safety of consumers in the US and other countries.

Additional products under recall

The expanded recall, as communicated in a media release by the company through its local distributor, Massy Distribution, now encompasses a wider range of products. Among them are:

1. Quaker Oatmeal Squares Cinnamon

2. Quaker Oatmeal Squares Brown Sugar

3. Cap'n Crunch OOPS! All Berries Cereal

Previously, the recall primarily focused on granola bars and granola cereals, but the inclusion of these popular cereal varieties underscores the seriousness of the situation.

The Salmonella threat

Salmonella, a potentially harmful bacterium, poses significant health risks, particularly to vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. While the symptoms of a Salmonella infection can vary, they often include:

  • Fever
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal Pain

Salmonella infections in the US

According to estimates provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 1.35 million cases of salmonella infection occur annually in the U.S., leading to roughly 26,500 hospitalizations and 420 deaths.
