Burke leads Portmore’s charge

Portmore secured their semi-final berth with a 2-1 victory over Cibao FC in their final Group B match, finishing second in the standings. They will now look to build on that performance and string together consecutive victories in the competition for the first time this season.

Veteran striker Corey Burke will be central to those ambitions. The forward, who has extensive experience playing in the United States, delivered when it mattered against Cibao, scoring twice to propel Portmore into the last four.

The hosts also have quality elsewhere in their attack. Javier Brown and Rashaun Small were both selected to the Caribbean Cup Best XI for the group stage, underlining the threat Portmore can pose despite the challenge awaiting them.

Violette arrive with perfect record

Violette, however, have been the picture of consistency. They swept through Group A with four victories from four matches, becoming only the second team in Caribbean Cup history to reach the semi-finals without dropping a point.

The Haitian club joins defending champions Mount Pleasant Football Academy in achieving that distinction, setting up a demanding assignment for Portmore.

Violette scored seven goals during the group stage, the highest total by any team in this season’s competition, while conceding only once. Their combination of attacking efficiency and defensive discipline makes them a formidable opponent over two legs.

Forwards Elyvens Dejean and Miche-Naider Chery have accounted for four of the team’s seven goals. Dejean’s contribution earned him a place in the Caribbean Cup Best XI for the group stage, further highlighting the danger Portmore must manage.

Clean sheet could prove decisive

Portmore’s defensive organization will be crucial if they are to gain the upper hand in the tie. With away goals still counting in the competition, conceding at Sabina Park could complicate their task in the return leg.

The Jamaican champions will therefore have the added incentive of attempting to become the first team to keep Violette scoreless this season.

That objective comes against the backdrop of an inconsistent domestic run. Portmore have won only once in their last three matches and have recorded consecutive draws, leaving them under pressure to deliver a more convincing performance on the regional stage.

Violette, meanwhile, have the Caribbean Cup as their sole active competition, with the Haitian league season yet to begin. Their uninterrupted focus on the tournament could be another factor Portmore must consider.

The semi-final will be decided over two legs, with the return match scheduled for Estadio Cibao in the Dominican Republic.

For Portmore, the immediate challenge is clear: turn home advantage into a meaningful lead while keeping Violette’s prolific attack at bay.
