Police to charge student after recovering gun at Dillard High School

Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale became the center of a police investigation on Friday following the unsettling discovery of a firearm on campus.

The discovery was made at the school at 2501 Northwest 11th Street.

Reports are that one student acted on suspicion, noticing another in possession of a gun and promptly alerting authorities.

The gun was found, and no one was injured.

Convergence of separate incidents

Fort Lauderdale Police disclosed that their presence at the school was initially due to a report of two juveniles trespassing.

These individuals confirmed not to be students of the high school, were apprehended, coinciding with the school being secured under lockdown.

While the officers were still at the school for the trespassing incident, they were notified about the student who potentially had a gun.

The school remained on lockdown while officers searched for the student.

Reports are that the student was detained, and the gun was found a short time later.

The police linked the 17-year-old they had in custody to the weapon, leading to an arrest and impending charges.

Despite the chronological overlap of the trespassing and gun-related events, authorities have stated the two are separate issues.
