Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 13-year-old in Florida City on Saturday night. The incident occurred around 8 p.m. near the 1300 block of Northwest 6th Avenue, according to Florida City Police officials. Authorities are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting and are actively pursuing leads in the case.

According to reports officers responded to a 911 when they arrived, they found a child in a backyard with gunshot wounds.

Authorities quickly initiated life-saving measures, and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue arrived on the scene to airlift the 13-year-old to Jackson South Trauma Center. Despite these efforts, the young teen did not survive his injuries. The family has identified the victim as 13 year old Johvon Taylor. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances of the shooting.

Taylor’s family described him as a loving and caring person that was full of energy.

Miami-Dade Crimestoppers reported that Florida City has already lost two young locals to gun violence in 2025, just days into the New Year. The tragic deaths underscore the ongoing challenges the community faces in addressing violence and ensuring safety for its residents, particularly its youth. Authorities are continuing their efforts to investigate the incidents and curb gun violence in the area.
