The Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating a fatal crash that killed a Pembroke Pines police officer.

According to investigators, on Thursday, Feb. 9, BSO traffic homicide detectives responded to the 1400 block of Northwest 184th Avenue in Pembroke Pines in reference to a single-vehicle crash that occurred shortly before noon involving a Pembroke Pines police officer. On scene, the preliminary investigation revealed that Officer Charles Herring was riding a 2020 Harley Davidson Police Road King motorcycle southbound on Northwest 184th Avenue. A witness told investigators that as Herring was travelling, a large palm frond fell from a tree within the median and struck him.

Herring was unable to maintain control of the motorcycle and drifted southeast into the median, where he struck two large palm trees and came to rest in the roadway.

Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue responded to the scene and transported Herring to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood where he was pronounced deceased.

The preliminary investigation reveals that excessive speed, driver impairment and mechanical malfunction are not considered contributing factors to the crash.
