Injuries have forced selectors to call up fast-bowling all-rounder Wayne Parnell and left-arm spinner Tabraiz Shamsi to the South Africa squad for the One-Day International (ODI) series against West Indies starting Thursday.

All-rounder Wiaan Mulder, who featured in the recent two-Test series, has been ruled out of the three-match series with a grade one left side strain while left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj suffered a ruptured left Achilles tendon during last week’s second Test in Johannesburg.

Subsequent scans showed significant damage, leaving Maharaj in danger of being out for up to six months.

Parnell, a 33-year-old left-armer, has played 72 ODIs, taking 98 wickets and scoring a single fifty. His last outing was against England last month.

Shamsi, meanwhile, who also turned out in the recent series against England, has taken 51 wickets from 41 ODIs with his wrist spin.

Batsman Temba Bavuma, who was recently appointed captain for the Test series, will again lead the Proteas for the ODI series.

West Indies have not beaten South Africa in a bilateral one-day series in three decades and have lost 19 of their last 20 ODIs against the hosts.
