Pair charged with smuggling and coercing Cuban women into prostitution in Miami-Dade
Miami-Dade authorities have apprehended a man and a woman on charges of human trafficking and prostitution after uncovering a scheme involving the smuggling of Cuban women into the United States and coercing them into sex work.
Vicenta Polanco, 30, and Luis Ariel Escalante, 24, found themselves in police custody on Tuesday, as per records from Miami-Dade jail.
The charges against them stem from the accounts of two victims who alleged being forced into prostitution under the direction of Polanco and Escalante.
Deceptive promises
According to arrest reports, the victims narrated a chilling sequence of events.
Initially enticed with promises of legitimate employment as exotic dancers in adult entertainment clubs, the women, upon arrival in the U.S., found themselves coerced into prostitution.
Their Cuban passports and legal documents, initially purportedly safeguarded for immigration processes, turned into instruments of coercion as collateral for their compliance.
Exploitation and coercion
Both victims, subjected to a grueling schedule of seven days a week and catering to four to five clients per day, faced relentless exploitation.
Escalante, the reports detailed, efficiently managed the financial transactions, collecting payments from the clients.
Forced labor and confinement
The victims operated out of an apartment where they were allowed to reside, while occasionally being transported to appointments by Polanco or Escalante.
However, their freedoms were severely restricted, with demands to hand over earnings and refusal to return documents until a debt, purportedly ranging from $10,000 to $12,000, was settled.
Legal proceedings and seizure of assets
Following the victims’ decision to seek help from law enforcement, Polanco and Escalante were arrested.
Subsequent investigations led to the discovery of significant evidence, including a substantial sum of cash, multiple electronic devices, and other incriminating materials from their residence.
Appearing in court on Wednesday, Polanco and Escalante were assigned public defenders and held without bond.
