The Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) has confirmed that over 1,400 special electors have cast their votes so far, as special voting commenced on Monday, April 22. The EBC is anticipating nearly 17,000 individuals to participate in the special voting process, which is designated for individuals unable to vote on the official polling day.
According to a statement from the EBC, the highest special voter turnout yesterday occurred in the Aranguez/St. Joseph constituency, where special voters continued to wait within the polling station precinct beyond 3:00 p.m. to cast their ballots. Despite this, the proceedings have been described as smooth and orderly.
Special electors include members of the protective services, EBC officials, election staff, and others who, due to their duties or circumstances, are unable to vote on the official Election Day.
Special voting will continue until Sunday, April 27.
For the upcoming general election next Monday, April 28, the special voting process also includes those involved in the Chaguanas West by-election. In the Chaguanas West constituency, seven special voters participated in early voting at the EBC’s office on Eleanor Street, Chaguanas, as of yesterday. Returning Officer Everil Ross reported that 79 people are listed as special voters for the by-election.
For Monday’s general election, 51 polling stations will be set up across 31 polling divisions in 14 buildings, with just under 300 EBC staff members trained for the event.
One of the special voters, Christine Rahman, who cast her ballot just after noon, shared her thoughts: “Everyone eligible to vote should exercise the franchise and go to the polls. It's your duty to come out and vote,” she said.
Special voters can cast their ballots daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. until voting closes on Sunday.
