Michael Dawson, CEO of Whirlwind Live Performances, is making a bold prediction about Oliver Samuels’ latest production, Where Dere’s A Will, Dere’s A Criminal.
In an era where statements can quickly go viral, a producer with Dawson’s experience might be expected to temper his promises. Instead, he is doubling down on his claim that the production could help return Jamaican live theater to its glory days.
Asked whether he wanted to rephrase his bold assessment of the play, Dawson stood firmly behind it.
“I said what I said. I have been taking Jamaican theater over the world for 14 years. Blessed to work on some great productions, but the way Oliver wrote and starred in this one....he wanted to make a statement and he did...this play will reignite Jamaica theater for years to come....its that funny...its that good....I put my entire reputation on it,” Dawson said.
Dawson, who is typically reserved in his assessments, said several elements of the production set it apart, including Samuels’ interaction with audiences and the play’s storyline.
“its Oliver's interaction with the audience, its his monologues....its the plot about 'Wills' and the fight for 'Dead Lef'....it is Oliver's best work yet in my opinion,” he said.
Whirlwind Live Performances will bring Where Dere’s A Will, Dere’s A Criminal to South Florida over Labor Day weekend.
The production is scheduled for 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, at Everglades High School in Miramar, followed by an 8 p.m. performance Sunday, Sept. 6, at the Coral Springs Center for the Performing Arts.
