NYC Mayor Eric Adams cuts budget for asylum seekers

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has revealed plans for an additional 10 per cent reduction in the city’s budget allocated for asylum seeker costs, building upon the previous successful 20 per cent cut outlined in the Preliminary Budget.

The announcement comes amidst the city’s ongoing efforts to provide comprehensive support to Caribbean and other migrants, aiming to facilitate their journey towards self-sufficiency.

Continued support for migrants

Many of the migrants and asylum seekers arriving in New York City from the southern border of the United States are nationals from Cuba, Haiti, Venezuela and Nicaragua.

Financial management praised

Mayor Adams’s declaration on Wednesday closely follows the commendation bestowed upon New York City by independent credit rating agency Moody’s Investors Service.

Moody’s affirmed the city’s Aa2 issuer rating and lauded the administration’s robust financial management practices.

Additionally, the agency recognized the successful implementation of budgetary measures aimed at addressing the fiscal challenges posed by the ongoing migrant crisis.
