No heroes named for Grenada’s inaugural National Heroes Day

While Grenada is set to observe its first-ever public holiday on October 19, named “National Heroes Day”, the inaugural event will not involve the declaration of any national heroes.

Setting the stage

Gail Purcell, a prominent member of the National Organizing Committee, firmly stated during a media conference that there will be no designation of national heroes for the year 2023.

Instead, this landmark occasion is intended to shift the spotlight onto the events of October 1983, serving as a heartfelt commemoration.

Future prospects

National Heroes Day is slated to rollout next year allowing ample time for review and public consultation.

Purcell emphasized that the decision to refrain from appointing a national hero on October 19, 2023, stems from the aspiration to pave the way for a more inclusive and participatory process in 2024.

He noted that this inclusive approach will encourage citizens to voice their opinions, contributing to the final decision-making process.

Commencing the day

The National Heroes Day celebration will kick off with an Ecumenical Service at the National Stadium, starting at 9 a.m.

All citizens are invited to attend this solemn gathering.

Notably, family members of the late former Prime Minister Maurice Bishop, alongside his wife, will be present to mark this significant occasion. The Maurice Bishop October 19 Martyr’s Foundation has also played a pivotal role by offering invaluable support in organizing the event.

The day’s program will feature captivating choir performances and a poignant theatrical production highlighting the events of October 19, 1983.

National moment of reflection

At 1 p.m., the resonating tolling of church bells will reverberate across Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique.

This will be followed by a collective national silence lasting one minute, as citizens are encouraged to pause and reflect in remembrance and respect for those who are no longer among us.
