The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced its teams of the year for 2023, with only two West Indies players making the cut.

Nicholas Pooran, aged 28 and a former white-ball captain, secured a spot in the Twenty20 International (T20I) squad, while Hayley Matthews, aged 25 and the current West Indies skipper, earned her place in the T20I squad as well.

Surprisingly, Shai Hope, the captain of the West Indies One-Day International (ODI) team, did not find a spot in the ICC's ODI squad, despite his outstanding record. Hope averaged 68 from 17 matches and scored three centuries during the year.

Squads based on player performances throughout the calendar year

The ICC's selection panel, comprised of media representatives forming the ICC Voting Academy, chose the squads based on player performances throughout the calendar year. Each squad consists of 11 players, including a captain and a wicketkeeper.

Pooran participated in 13 T20I matches last year, averaging 29.5 with two half-centuries to his name. The Trinidadian was also selected as the wicketkeeper in the T20I squad, having taken 10 catches and completed two stumpings.

On the women's side, Matthews excelled in the T20I format, accumulating 700 runs at an impressive average of 63 from 14 matches, which included one century and four fifties. She particularly stood out in a series against Australia, amassing 310 runs at an astonishing average of 155. Matthews also contributed significantly with her off-spin, capturing 19 wickets at an average of 16.
