Narine spins Tridents into submission as TKR defend 148

Nicholas Pooran supplied the fireworks with the bat, then Sunil Narine turned the game into a suffocating exercise in survival as Trinbago Knight Riders defended a modest total to beat Barbados Tridents in a low-scoring CPL 2026 contest on Saturday night.

Pooran’s late assault produced a crucial 59 from 37 balls, transforming a sluggish Knight Riders innings into a total of 148.

Narine then made sure it was enough.

The veteran spinner struck three times during the powerplay, and by the time Akeal Hosein joined the attack with another wicket in the sixth over, the Tridents were reeling at 35 for 4.

From there, the chase never recovered.

Pooran finds the spark

For much of the first innings, batting appeared to be a battle against both the conditions and the bowlers.

Pooran himself needed 10 deliveries simply to get off the mark.

Once he settled, however, the game changed.

He began with a whip through the leg side off debutant Jakeem Pollard before unleashing a remarkable sequence of six-hitting.

Three consecutive sixes disappeared off Mujeeb Ur Rahman in the ninth over.

Pooran repeated the feat in the 14th, launching three more in succession against Gudakesh Motie.

A potentially decisive escape came when Rivaldo Clarke dropped Pooran at deep thirdman off Pollard. Pooran was on 35 from 26 balls at the time.

He made the reprieve count.

One batter changes the equation

Pooran eventually finished with 59 from 37, but his influence stretched well beyond his individual score.

Knight Riders scored 96 runs from 63 balls while Pooran was at the crease, compared with only 51 from the 57 balls surrounding his innings.

His acceleration provided TKR with the cushion their bowlers would soon need.

Motie endured an especially difficult outing, claiming three wickets but conceding 29 runs in just two overs. Mujeeb finished with 2 for 22 from his four overs.

The Tridents, meanwhile, were left with a target that looked manageable on paper.

It quickly became anything but.

Narine turns the chase into a struggle

Narine struck three times during the powerplay, ripping through the Tridents' top order before they could establish any rhythm.

Hosein added another wicket in the sixth over, leaving Barbados at 35 for 4 at the end of the powerplay.

The damage was not merely in the wickets.

The Knight Riders' spinners squeezed every available run from the surface, forcing the Tridents' batsmen to take risks without giving them the scoring opportunities needed to build a chase.

Usman Tariq was particularly economical, conceding only 25 runs from his four overs.

Jyd Goolie added three wickets with his offspin as the pressure mounted.

No rescue act for Barbados

The Tridents never found the substantial innings required to threaten the target.

Zachary Carter and Sherfane Rutherford shared top-scoring honors with only 21 apiece, a reflection of how thoroughly the Knight Riders had controlled the chase.

Fast bowler Lahiru Kumara also played his part, taking two wickets, including the prized scalp of Rutherford.

When Narine returned to claim the final wicket, the Tridents were all out with nine balls still unused.

Spin completes the job

The numbers told the story of TKR's strangulation.

Narine, Hosein, Tariq and Goolie combined for 8 for 82 in 14.3 overs, suffocating the Tridents through control, variation and relentless pressure.

Pooran had given the Knight Riders the explosive innings they needed.

Narine and his fellow spinners then made sure the 148-run target became a mountain the Tridents could not climb.

It was a classic Knight Riders formula: one batter providing the punch, followed by a disciplined spin attack that left the opposition with nowhere to escape.
