The City of Miramar is mobilizing the community to provide urgently needed humanitarian assistance to families in Venezuela following the devastating earthquake that has left communities in need of emergency support.

Venezuela is experiencing a massive national crisis after being devastated by back-to-back earthquakes on Wednesday, June 24. The death toll has rapidly risen to at least 920 fatalities, with more than 3,360 people injured and an estimated 50,000 people reported missing.

Recognizing the strong ties between Miramar and the Venezuelan community, the city is calling on residents, businesses, faith-based organizations and community partners to unite in support of relief efforts by donating essential supplies.

“Miramar has always been a community that leads with compassion. Many of our neighbors have family and loved ones in Venezuela who are experiencing unimaginable loss and uncertainty,” said Mayor Wayne Messam. “In moments like these, we are reminded that humanity knows no borders. Every case of water, every package of food, every hygiene kit represents hope for a family trying to rebuild their lives.”

To help ensure donations reach those affected as quickly as possible, the City of Miramar has partnered with Global Empowerment Mission (GEM), an internationally recognized disaster relief organization that will coordinate the transportation and distribution of donated supplies directly to impacted communities in Venezuela.

The following items will be accepted (as outlined on the accompanying flyer as well):

  • Nonperishable food items
  • Water
  • Emergency supplies (batteries, blankets, first-aid items and kits)
  • Hygiene products
  • Baby supplies
  • New blankets
  • Protective gear (KN95 masks, gloves)
  • Clean-up and repair supplies

Global Empowerment Mission does not accept clothing, shoes, linens or similar items.

“The City of Miramar has always responded to those in need with compassion, unity and action,” said Commissioner Yvette Colbourne. “Many members of our community have deep personal and family ties to Venezuela, making this tragedy especially heartbreaking. This humanitarian relief drive is an opportunity for each of us to stand beside our neighbors in a meaningful way.”

The locations below will accept donations immediately, 24 hours a day, through Friday, July 31, 2026:

  • Miramar Police Headquarters — 11765 City Hall Promenade
  • Fire Station 19 — 6700 Miramar Parkway
