Minister Ed Bartlett addresses Godfrey Stewart Foundation fund raising in Miramar
The third annual Godfrey Stewart Foundation and Dinner Dance was held earlier this month at the Miramar Multi-Complex Civic Center with Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism, Ed Bartlett, the keynote speaker.
A cheque for $4,000 was presented by the past student’s association to principal of Godfrey Stewart High School, Emily Lawrence-Ricketts. The funds will go to the Westmoreland school’s breakfast program which the Foundation has funded for the past three years.
The funds were raised from three events staged by the Foundation --- a cookout in The Bahamas, a raffle/fish fry at C&S Caribbean Restaurant and Grocery in Pembroke Pines and the dinner/dance.
Bartlett, who is from Westmoreland parish in Jamaica, spoke about the importance of Jamaicans living in the Diaspora giving back to their communities in Jamaica. A sound education, he stressed, is critical to a child’s development.
Located in Savanna-la-Mar, Westmoreland parish’s chief town, Godfrey Stewart High School was founded in 1963. Over the years, it has been upgraded from a junior secondary and comprehensive high school to high school in 2000.
