Miller-Uibo, Jamaican women win at Zurich Diamond League

Bahamian, Jamaicans restore Caribbean pride

Bahamian sprinter, Shanae Miller-Uibo put the disappointment of her below par performance at the London World Championships with a convincing win in the women’s 200 meters at the Zurich Diamond League on Thursday.

Miller-Uibo clocked a personal best and national record of 21.88 to defeat Jamaica’s double Olympic champion Elaine Thompson and Marie Josee Talou of the Ivory Coast into second and third respectively. Two-time world champion Dafne Schippers was fourth while the other Caribbean representative, Simone Facey was seventh.

Miller-Uibo showed poise and true grit

Miller-Ubio came off the bend in third place behind Thompson and Talou but showed poise and true grit to claw back her rivals for a relatively easy win that is sure to wipe away memories of the bronze medal placing in the World Games.

The Jamaican women’s team of Christine Williams, Jura Levy, Facey and Thompson also visited the winner’s enclosure when the won the women’s 4X100 meters relay over Great Britain & Northern Ireland and Germany.

Elaine Thompson fought hard for win

Thompson also had to fight hard to peg back the Great Britain and German anchor runners who held a sizeable lead. Digging deep into her reserves she clinched victory in the final stride.

In the women’s 100 meters hurdles Jamaican Danielle Williams was fourth in a race won by the evergreen Canadian Sally Pearson.

Asafa Powell fails

Jamaican veteran sprinter Asafa Powell failed in his bid to post his 98th sub-10 second clocking after finishing seventh in 10:11 seconds in a race won by Ujah Chindu of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in a season’s best of 9.97 seconds. World Champion Justin Gatlin was fourth.
