MIA anticipates record-breaking holiday travel season
Miami International Airport (MIA) is anticipating a surge in passenger numbers during the 17-day travel period encompassing Christmas and New Year’s Day, from December 21 to January 6.
Airport officials announced on Monday that they are preparing to welcome over 2.7 million passengers.
A 6.1 per cent surge in travel numbers
This projected influx represents a remarkable 6.1 per cent increase over last year’s already record-breaking holiday travel season.
This translates to a daily average of nearly 162,000 travelers passing through the airport’s gates.
Peak travel days
The peak travel days on the radar are December 22-23, December 26-30, and January 2-6. During these periods, daily traffic is anticipated to soar past 165,000 travelers.
A milestone on the horizon
These staggering figures also indicate that Miami International Airport is en route to achieving a new annual record.
By the end of this month, the airport is poised to welcome an impressive 52 million passengers throughout the year.
Sunday surges to the top
But before the bustling atmosphere of the peak days takes over, a noteworthy milestone was achieved on a seemingly ordinary Sunday. Airport officials reported that Sunday was the busiest single day in the airport’s storied history.
Early bird gets the smooth flight
In the face of this whirlwind of activity, Jessica Marin, MIA’s innovation chief, has a piece of advice for travelers.
She recommends arriving at the airport early, suggesting that domestic passengers should aim for a three-hour head start, while international travelers should consider a four-hour cushion.
Marin emphasized that the airport has taken measures to ensure a smooth holiday rush.
Notably, they have increased the number of personnel within the terminal. This enhancement serves a dual purpose - assisting passengers with navigation and managing crowd control.
To facilitate passenger support, terminal operations staff have been equipped with miniature iPads, simplifying passenger guidance and providing essential information.
