Mbappé reaches another historic milestone

Mbappé’s strike in the 60th minute marked the 20th World Cup goal of his remarkable career, reached in just his 20th tournament appearance. The goal moved him within one of Argentina captain Lionel Messi’s career World Cup tally.

Six minutes later, Mbappé again proved instrumental. After receiving a pass inside the attacking third, he cleverly laid the ball into Dembélé’s path before continuing his run, dragging defenders away and creating the opening that allowed his teammate to score his fifth goal of the tournament.

France’s dominance finally pays off

Although France controlled proceedings from the opening whistle, they were forced to wait before their superiority appeared on the scoreboard.

Mbappé threatened in only the fourth minute, narrowly sending an effort wide of the right post. The breakthrough looked even closer in the 25th minute when the French captain burst into the penalty area and was brought down by Morocco defender Noussair Mazraoui.

Referee Facundo Tello immediately pointed to the penalty spot, but a lengthy video review delayed the kick. Once cleared to proceed, Mbappé attempted a hesitation in his run-up before aiming for the right corner, only for goalkeeper Yassine Bounou to read the effort perfectly and make the save.

Despite the missed opportunity, France remained firmly in control, outshooting Morocco 13-1 before halftime.

Second-half clinical finish ends Morocco’s run

The pressure finally told midway through the second half.

Following Morocco’s failure to clear the danger, Mbappé collected possession just outside the penalty area, advanced a few strides, and curled a precise finish inside the far post. He celebrated by spreading his arms before racing toward the sideline to embrace his teammates.

The defending then unraveled again six minutes later as Mbappé’s intelligent movement and awareness opened space for Dembélé, who calmly finished to double France’s advantage and effectively settle the contest.

France finished with an overwhelming 21-4 advantage in total shots and an 8-1 edge in efforts on target, underscoring its command throughout the match.

Late injury concern quickly eases

France briefly held its breath in the closing stages when Mbappé was brought down in the 76th minute. He was substituted moments later and appeared on the bench with an ice pack strapped to his right ankle.

Any concerns were quickly eased after the final whistle, however, as Mbappé celebrated enthusiastically with his teammates, running and jumping with both boots back on.

Morocco unable to repeat historic magic

Morocco, which became the first African nation to reach a World Cup semi-final during the 2022 tournament in Qatar, where France also eliminated the Atlas Lions 2-0, struggled to establish sustained attacking pressure.

Their best opportunity arrived just before halftime when Achraf Hakimi curled a free kick from just outside the penalty area narrowly beyond the right post.

Head coach Mohamed Ouahbi acknowledged that his side never found the rhythm needed to challenge the French.

“We are very disappointed. We wanted to go on,” Ouahbi said. “When we had ball possession, our transitions were not great and we had to run a little more. Their players were in their comfort zone.”

With Mbappé once again proving the difference after an early setback, France marched confidently into the tournament's final four, keeping alive its quest to add another chapter to an already extraordinary World Cup legacy.
