Opening pair destroys Irish attack

The chase was effectively decided by an extraordinary 258-run opening partnership between Matthews and Grimmond, a stand that eclipsed the previous West Indies women's ODI record of 204 established by Stafanie Taylor and Juliana Nero in 2011.

From the outset, both batters imposed themselves on Ireland's bowlers.

The pair hammered 13 boundaries during the first 10 overs before carrying the West Indies to 100 inside just 14 overs, immediately placing the hosts under relentless pressure.

Matthews reached a magnificent century from only 90 deliveries before accelerating even further, punishing the Irish attack with an array of elegant strokeplay and powerful hitting.

By the close of her unforgettable innings, the captain had amassed an unbeaten 159 from 123 balls, decorated with 24 fours and two towering sixes.

Grimmond, appearing in only her sixth ODI, produced the finest innings of her young international career with 91, striking 11 boundaries and narrowly missing a richly deserved maiden century. After surviving a dropped chance on 84, she finally departed with victory virtually secured and only 12 runs still required.

Ireland squanders strong position

Earlier, Ireland had posted what initially looked to be a competitive total of 269 after Amy Hunter anchored the innings superbly with 96.

Hunter stitched together four half-century partnerships, sharing valuable stands with captain Gaby Lewis, who contributed a brisk 39, Orla Prendergast, who made 30, and Rebecca Stokell, who added 20.

The hosts maintained healthy momentum through much of the innings and appeared well positioned to surpass 270 while scoring at better than five-and-a-half runs per over through 38 overs.

Matthews and Fletcher spark middle-order collapse

West Indies gradually wrestled control away through disciplined spin bowling.

Matthews provided the breakthrough by dismissing the dangerous Lewis before veteran leg-spinner Afy Fletcher struck another telling blow by removing Prendergast.

Working in tandem, the experienced pair dismantled Ireland's middle order, claiming four wickets between the 34th and 40th overs to halt the innings' momentum.

Fletcher finished with outstanding figures of four for 49, while Matthews complemented her brilliant batting with three for 52, completing a superb all-around display that shaped every phase of the match.

Missed opportunity proves costly

Ireland's hopes of defending their total suffered a decisive setback in the 12th over of the chase.

With Matthews on 52, Jane Maguire spilled a difficult chance, handing the West Indies captain a reprieve she ruthlessly exploited.

The missed opportunity proved devastating, as Matthews responded by producing one of the most dominant innings ever played by a West Indies woman in ODI cricket, ensuring Ireland never regained a foothold.

Supported brilliantly by Grimmond's mature and composed knock, the captain orchestrated a chase that not only secured an emphatic series-opening victory but also etched both players into the West Indies record books.

It was a performance defined by authority, precision and fearless strokeplay, one that announced the Caribbean side's intentions for the remainder of the series while setting a new benchmark in the history of West Indies Women's One-Day International cricket.
