Brazil needed every second available on Monday night before Gabriel Martinelli produced a dramatic late winner to secure a 2-1 victory over Japan and send the five-time champions into the World Cup round of 16.

With extra time looming and Japan standing firm, Martinelli came off the bench to become Brazil’s unlikely hero, finding the breakthrough in the sixth minute of stoppage time.

The decisive goal ended a tense contest and kept Brazil’s pursuit of a record sixth World Cup title alive.

Brazil will now meet either Ivory Coast or Norway in the next round on Sunday in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Japan shock Brazil before the comeback begins

The match took an unexpected turn when Japan struck first in the 29th minute.

Kaishu Sano capitalized on a misplaced Brazilian pass in midfield, carrying the ball forward before unleashing a right-footed effort from outside the penalty area that gave Japan the lead.

The goal briefly placed Brazil under pressure and forced them to chase the match.

Japan’s defensive structure frustrated Brazil’s attack, and goalkeeper Zion Suzuki repeatedly kept his team within reach of a famous result.

Casemiro restores balance

Brazil finally found their response early in the second half.

After narrowly missing a chance moments earlier, Casemiro leveled the match in the 56th minute with a powerful header from a Gabriel Magalhães delivery.

The ball moved beyond Suzuki’s reach and settled into the net, bringing Brazil back into the contest.

The equalizer changed the rhythm of the match as Brazil pushed forward searching for the winning goal.

Suzuki keeps Japan alive as Brazil push forward

Japan continued to threaten while relying on Suzuki’s performance in goal.

The goalkeeper produced several key interventions, including a crucial stop on Bruno Guimarães’ header in the 52nd minute.

Shortly afterward, Casemiro’s header struck a defender before also catching Suzuki, who still managed to keep the effort out.

Suzuki finished the match with four saves, playing a major role in Japan’s resistance.

Brazil star Vinícius Júnior also came close to putting his side ahead in the 58th minute, but his shot from the left side of the box was deflected by Suzuki and hit the far post.

Vinícius entered the match as one of Brazil’s leading performers, having already scored four goals in the tournament.

Martinelli delivers the final moment

As the clock moved toward full time, Brazil appeared destined for another 30 minutes of action.

Instead, Martinelli changed the story.

The substitute arrived at the perfect moment, scoring in the sixth minute of stoppage time to break Japan’s resistance and send Brazilian supporters into celebration.

It was a moment of individual brilliance that rescued Brazil from a dangerous opponent and reinforced their ability to find solutions under pressure.

Casemiro was substituted in the first minute of second-half stoppage time with what appeared to be a leg injury, adding another concern for Brazil as the match reached its conclusion.

Japan’s historic wait continues

Despite a brave performance, Japan’s search for a first World Cup knockout victory continues.

The Japanese have never won a match beyond the group stage at the tournament, though their latest performance showed they remain capable of challenging the world’s strongest teams.

Brazil, meanwhile, extended their dominance in the rivalry, earning their 12th victory in 15 meetings with Japan.

The two nations have also drawn twice, while Japan’s only win in the series came in a friendly match in Tokyo in October.

Brazil move forward, but Japan earns respect

The final score favored Brazil, but the match revealed the growing competitiveness of the World Cup stage.

Japan pushed one of football’s greatest nations to the edge, while Brazil once again found a way when the pressure was highest.

And in the end, it was Martinelli’s late touch that delivered the difference, keeping Brazil’s championship dream alive.
