Justin Greaves’ July explosion earns ICC Player of the Month momination

Justin Greaves has turned a month of outstanding all-round cricket into a major individual honor, earning a place among the three nominees for the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award for July.

The 32-year-old Barbadian is competing for the award against England’s Harry Brook and Bangladesh opener Tanzid Hasan after producing a series of match-defining performances for the West Indies across Test and ODI cricket.

Greaves’ July campaign was highlighted by both bat and ball. He was named Player-of-the-Series in West Indies’ 1-0 Test series victory over Sri Lanka and again received the same distinction following the drawn two-match Test series against Pakistan.

His nomination comes after a month in which he amassed 215 Test runs at an average of 71.66 and claimed eight wickets at an extraordinary average of 10.25.

A stunning 180 sets the tone

Greaves announced his intentions in emphatic fashion during the opening Test against Sri Lanka in Antigua.

With the West Indies needing a substantial response after Sri Lanka’s first innings, the Barbadian produced a superb 180, anchoring the Caribbean side’s reply and helping them establish a strong position.

It was the kind of innings that defined his month: substantial, authoritative and delivered when his team needed it most.

But Greaves was only getting started.

From match-winning bat to devastating ball

By the end of July, Greaves had produced another performance of decisive impact, this time with the ball.

In the first Test against Pakistan in Trinidad, he ripped through the opposition batting with 5-27 in the first innings.

He returned in the second innings to claim another 2-12, finishing with seven wickets in the match and playing a central role in West Indies’ victory.

Across two Tests, Greaves combined elite production in both disciplines, averaging more than 70 with the bat while conceding just 10.25 runs per wicket with the ball.

He also appeared in two ODIs during the month, scoring 32 runs at a strike rate of 114.28.

Brook brings explosive white-ball numbers

Greaves faces formidable competition for the award.

England’s Harry Brook enjoyed a highly productive July, particularly during his country’s T20I campaign against India.

Although he scored only 31 runs across three ODIs, Brook exploded in the five-match T20I series, accumulating 229 runs at an average of 114.50.

His strike rate of 214.01 underlined the extraordinary attacking nature of his performances.

Brook finished as the series’ leading run-scorer and was rewarded with the Player-of-the-Series honor.

Hasan leads Bangladesh’s white-ball charge

Bangladesh’s Tanzid Hasan completes the shortlist after emerging as one of his country’s most reliable performers during the white-ball series against Zimbabwe.

The opening batter finished July as the leading run-scorer across the two formats.

In three ODIs, Hasan accumulated 159 runs at an average of 53.00, striking at 89.83.

He was equally effective in the T20Is, adding 140 runs at an average of 70.00 while maintaining a strike rate of 127.27.

His consistency across both formats makes him a serious contender alongside Greaves and Brook.

Greaves’ case rests on complete impact

The three nominees offer very different cases.

Brook supplied explosive T20 batting. Hasan delivered consistency across Bangladesh’s white-ball assignments. Greaves, however, produced match-winning contributions in both disciplines at Test level while also contributing in ODIs.

His July record tells the story: 215 Test runs, eight wickets, two Player-of-the-Series awards and a central role in West Indies victories over Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

For the Barbadian all-rounder, the ICC nomination provides further recognition of a month in which he repeatedly demonstrated the ability to change matches with either bat or ball.
