Jamaica’s public health system lauded by PAHO Director

Dr. Jarbas Barbosa da Silva, the Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), has praised Jamaica’s public health system, identifying the island as a Caribbean leader in addressing public health concerns.

This recognition came during his four-day visit to Jamaica, a significant moment as the island, along with Belize and St. Vincent & the Grenadines, is set to be certified by the World Health Organization (WHO) for eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis.

Strategic meetings enhance health initiatives

During his visit, Dr. Barbosa met with Jamaica’s Minister of Health & Wellness, Dr. Christopher Tufton, along with senior health officials.

Their discussions took place at the Ministry of Health & Wellness’ headquarters in New Kingston, focusing on key public health priorities such as primary health care reform, investment in prevention programs, and health system strengthening.

Inspiring regional public health leadership

Dr. Barbosa emphasized Jamaica’s vital role within the Caribbean to inspire and lead in public health initiatives.

He highlighted the island’s capacity to advocate for greater global support in public health, particularly for the Caribbean and Latin America.

This advocacy is crucial in drawing attention and resources to public health matters across these regions.

A visit marking continuity and commitment

This visit marks Dr. Barbosa as the second PAHO Director to travel to Jamaica since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrating PAHO’s ongoing commitment to the region.

Dr. Barbosa, who began his tenure on February 1, 2023, follows Dr. Carissa Etienne, who served as PAHO Director from 2012 until January 2023.
