Jamaica’s Governor General sees blooming prospects for agriculture industry

Jamaica appears to be at the ideal crossroads for growth within its agricultural sector, according to the country’s Governor General Sir Patrick Allen.

The Governor General’s address was delivered by Custos of Clarendon William Shagoury at the 69th Denbigh Agricultural, Industrial and Food Show at the Denbigh Showground in Clarendon on Sunday.

In his remarks, he emphasized that the focus on investment in agriculture must remain consistent.

Investing in farmers: Tools, knowledge, and support

He outlined the necessity of providing farmers with the tools, knowledge, and support they require to flourish in a rapidly changing world.

Among the areas he identified for improvement were enhancing access to financing, boosting research and development, building market connections, and promoting sustainable practices that would safeguard the environment for future generations.

Challenges and opportunities in the agricultural landscape

The Governor General acknowledged the existing challenges on the path to agricultural success. These include climate change, shifting market demands, and the imperative to adopt sustainable farming techniques.

Despite these hurdles, he expressed confidence in the country’s ability to navigate them successfully. He pointed to the Denbigh Agricultural, Industrial and Food Show as evidence of the resilience, dedication, and remarkable progress exhibited by Jamaica's farmers and agricultural stakeholders.

Furthermore, he expressed gratitude to the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS) for their relentless efforts in nurturing the nation’s agricultural sector.

Emphasizing local produce: A vision for sustainable agriculture

He also encouraged Jamaicans to support local produce, asserting that this would contribute to a robust, prosperous, and lasting agricultural industry.

Emphasizing unity and collaboration, he called for the harnessing of collective strength, forging of new partnerships, and seizing the opportunities that lie ahead. In doing so, he voiced his vision for a nation where the motto could be embodied that every Jamaican eats what they grow and grows what they eat.
