Jamaica’s diaspora Digital Registration Portal set for public testing later this year

Jamaica’s Digital Registration Portal, designed to harness data for informed diaspora-related decision-making, is on track for public testing later in the year.

A collaborative endeavor

Crafted in collaboration with the Inter-American Development (IDB), this portal is a key outcome of the National Diaspora Policy.

According to the Jamaica Information Service (JIS), the initiative underscores the Jamaican government’s dedication to devising diaspora strategies that elevate both national development and the diaspora community’s well-being.

Tailored services for diaspora

Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Hon. Alando Terrelonge noted that the portal is not just a data collector.

Its services are custom-designed, offering outreach activities, socio-economic engagement, and efficient data collection and access.

Terrelonge shared that these services will seamlessly align with various Jamaican government sectors.

He was speaking during the Regional Jamaica Diaspora Conference in Canada on September 23.

Jamaica’s diaspora connects in Canada

This event became a melting pot of Jamaican diaspora members from all over Canada, an occasion to rejoice in their mutual heritage, foster cultural ties, and brainstorm collaborative advancements.

The rise of JAMDEM

Terrelonge also spoke of the Jamaica Diaspora Engagement Model (JAMDEM).

Being co-developed with the International Organization for Migration (IMO), this investment portal is expected to be operational in the coming months.

Engaging the youth

Terrelonge shared a noticeable enthusiasm is bubbling among diaspora youth, with many showing a strong inclination towards education, sports, tech, tourism, investment, innovation, and arts.

Hon. Terrelonge pointed out the proactive steps taken to connect with relevant ministries.

This is to optimally harness their resources, especially in anticipation of the commendable efforts of the Global Jamaica Diaspora Youth Council as directed by the National Diaspora Policy.

A collective vision for the future

Hon. Terrelonge’s concluding appeal was for unified support for these platforms, emphasizing their design with the diaspora’s feedback and needs in mind.

He envisions a future where members of the diaspora recognize Jamaica as their true birthright and actively contribute to its prosperity.
