Jamaica’s Ambassador to the United States, Her Excellency Audrey Marks, has lauded the visionary founders of the 74-year-old West Indies Social Club (WISC) in Hartford, Connecticut, for fostering a unified and enduring spirit within the Caribbean Diaspora.

The legacy of WISC

Since its inception in 1950 by a group of Caribbean farm workers, the WISC has been a beacon of togetherness, embodying the collective strength of the Diaspora.

Ambassador Marks highlighted the club’s pivotal role in cultivating a culture of unity, emphasizing the significance of its 74th annual anniversary gala held on April 20.

A timely celebration

Addressing over 400 attendees at the gala, Ambassador Marks underscored the timely nature of the event.

The theme, “Ignite Unity,” resonated deeply, symbolizing the strength found in unity—a sentiment echoed in the mottos of various West Indian nations.

Recognizing WISC’s leadership

Ambassador Marks expressed gratitude to Club President Beverly Redd and the WISC Executive for their unwavering commitment to upholding the club’s vision.

She commended their efforts in providing a “home away from home” for West Indians in the Diaspora.

The birth of a museum

During her remarks, President Redd announced plans for a museum within the club’s complex, slated to open in October.

The museum will showcase the rich history of Hartford's West Indian community, highlighting the enduring legacy of unity and resilience.

Reflecting on the club’s origins, President Redd recounted the challenges faced by West Indian migrants in the 1940s and 50s.

In response to social injustices and inequalities, the founding fathers of WISC came together to bridge divides and build collective strength, laying the foundation for the club’s enduring legacy.

The 10th Biennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference

Ambassador Marks seized the opportunity to extend an invitation to Jamaicans and friends of Jamaica to participate in the 10th Biennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference.

Under the theme “United for Jamaica’s Transformation,” the conference emphasizes the power of unity in driving positive change.

Celebrating Jamaica’s progress

Highlighting Jamaica’s achievements, Ambassador Marks emphasized the country’s remarkable progress, from debt reduction to infrastructure development.

She invited attendees to witness firsthand the strides being made and to engage in shaping Jamaica’s future at the conference.

Shaping Jamaica’s future together

Ambassador Marks also urged attendees to seize the opportunity to contribute to Jamaica’s development and explore business opportunities.

She expressed anticipation for a vibrant gathering in Jamaica in June, underscoring the importance of collective action in shaping the nation’s future.
