Jamaican student at University of Florida dies in Jamaica car crash

Shadedra Williams, a 23-year-old Jamaican who attended the University of Florida in the United States, has become the latest victim of a car crash in Caribbean island. 

Reports are that the tragedy occurred on the Mandela Highway in St Catherine, Jamaica, on Saturday.

Details of the incident 

According to reports, the accident occurred around 5:45 am.

Williams was a passenger in a Mercedes Benz SUV, heading toward St Catherine when the vehicle struck the rear of a parked truck. 

The impact caused the SUV to spin out of control and collide with a Suzuki Vitara traveling in the same direction.

Williams suffered critical injuries during the incident and was pronounced dead at the hospital. 

The crash did not cause any other serious injuries, as reported by the police.

Ongoing investigation

The Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch (PSTEB) of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, led by Assistant Commissioner of Police Gary McKenzie, has initiated a thorough investigation into the crash. 

The primary concern is to ascertain whether dangerous driving led to the fatal accident, especially since the SUV had just passed a speed checkpoint at Six Miles.

According to Superintendent Lanford Salmon from the Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch, the driver of the vehicle in which Miss Williams died reported that other motorists were racing, and a near miss with his vehicle led to the crash.

Williams who is from Four Paths in Clarendon, had only recently returned to the island for the holidays.
