Jamaican Southern Miss junior Zayne Palomino soars to victory in high jump at Crimson Tide Invitational
Jamaican athlete and Southern Miss junior, Zayne Palomino, continued his impressive season with a commanding victory in the high jump at the Crimson Tide Invitational held at the Sam Bailey Stadium in Alabama on Saturday.
Palomino displayed his prowess in the event by securing his third win of the season. He started the competition strong with a first-time clearance of 2.05m before smoothly navigating over the 2.10m mark on his second attempt.
The competition intensified as Palomino faced the challenge of clearing 2.14m, which he accomplished after three attempts. However, it was at the height of 2.17m that Palomino emerged victorious, showcasing his exceptional skills in the high jump.
Despite three unsuccessful attempts at 2.20m, his personal best, which he achieved at the Sun Belt Indoor Championships in February, Palomino's performance was enough to secure the win.
Christopher Young dominated the men's shot put
In the closely contested event, Corvell Todd and Jacob Patten both cleared 2.10m to claim second and third place, respectively.
Meanwhile, Barton County Community College sophomore Christopher Young dominated the men's shot put, unleashing a massive throw of 18.57m to secure the top spot. Memphis sophomore Sascha Schmidt followed closely in second place with a throw of 18.43m, while Southern Miss sophomore Piers Cameron rounded out the top three with a throw of 17.95m.
On the track, Florida State sophomore Shenese Walker showcased her speed by winning the women's 200m event with a time of 23.20 seconds. She was closely followed by her teammate Kaniya Johnson, who finished in second place with a time of 23.62 seconds. Southern Miss senior Kenia Seals completed the podium, clocking 23.65 seconds for third place.
Overall, the Crimson Tide Invitational provided an exciting platform for athletes like Zayne Palomino to shine, showcasing their talent and determination on the track and in the field events.
