A Jamaican policewoman has been charged in relation to the investigation of the alleged rape and robbery of a female motorist in St. Elizabeth last month.
Charged is Constable Lavern Hendricks, 44, of Ginger Hill district in the parish. She is charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice and misconduct in a public office.
Reports are that on January 30, a female motorist was stopped at a checkpoint operation due to a breach of the Road Traffic Act.
Constable Alwayne Hill, the cop previously slapped with multiple charges in the case, allegedly solicited money in exchange for not prosecuting the woman.
It is reported that the woman went to an ATM in Black River, where she tried to withdraw the funds, but was unsuccessful.
She was then instructed to drive to a supermarket, where she was led to the back of the building. The cop allegedly raped her and threatened to kill her if she reported it.
According to police reports, the woman reported the incident to Hendricks, who was on duty at the time, but Hendricks allegedly told her to lie in exchange for money.
Hendricks also reportedly gave a false statement to her colleagues, who subsequently launched an investigation into the case.
The investigation was escalated to a senior investigator, and a case file was compiled and submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions, who ruled that Hill and Hendricks be charged.
