Jamaican man held in Belize on suspicion of immigration violations

A Jamaican man finds himself entangled in immigration complications in Belize as authorities accuse him of using the country as a transit point for migration to the United States. 

Carlos Higgins who hails from the parish of Manchester, has been detained at the Philip Goldson International Airport in Belize since November 24.

Suspicions arise

According to reports, Higgins was detained when authorities raised concerns about the veracity of Higgins’ intentions during his stay in their country. 

He has been charged with willfully providing false information to the immigration officer upon demand.

Legal defense takes shape

Higgins appeared with attorney Norman Rodriguez on Monday and pleaded not guilty.

The Belize Immigration Department contends that Higgins failed to provide truthful responses to their inquiries and further stand accused of falsifying information on his disembarkation card.

Bail request and defense arguments

Prosecutor Ismael Pulido applied for the court to deny bail to Higgins considering he is a flight risk.

However, attorney Rodriguez contended that the charges were maliciously filed after an unprecedented nine days in detention.

Court ruling and conditions

Magistrate Mannan Dennison presiding over the case acknowledged that there appeared to be enough evidence to proceed, leading to a decision to grant bail.

 The bail amount was set at $5,000, contingent upon two sureties. 

As part of the bail conditions, Carlos Higgins was required to surrender his travel documents and seek court permission for any future applications. 

Additionally, he must make weekly appearances at the Belize City immigration office.

His next court appearance scheduled for February 12. As he faces the uncertain path of immigration accusations in Belize, the outcome of his case remains to be seen.
