Jamaican farmers encouraged to utilize sustainable agricultural practices

The Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) is reiterating its call for farmers to embrace responsible and sustainable agricultural practices.

With a vision to fortify the farming sector, RADA has embarked on an islandwide campaign to elevate the practice of farming through robust, sustainable, and efficient extension services.

The extension services: A catalyst for growth 

RADA officers play a pivotal role, continuously imparting invaluable insights and resources that propel the growth trajectory of farmers’ businesses. 

This comes as a response to the dynamic challenges faced by the agriculture sector and seeks to empower farmers with knowledge and tools.

Leveraging the ministry's support for enhanced farming practices 

Maxine Brown, RADA’s Livestock Specialist, emphasized that the backing received from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Mining via RADA is not just a fleeting gesture.

She also shared that farmers can help maintain this support by demonstrating consistent care and integrating the right agricultural practices.

RADA's multi-faceted approach 

Further accentuating their holistic approach, RADA does not stop at just sharing knowledge. Brown highlighted that the Authority also distributes practical tools and equipment aimed at streamlining farm operations.

For instance, they offer shafting machines to efficiently process grass for silage or direct use, optimizing the utility of forages. Additionally, Brown said that in a move to ensure livestock welfare, RADA equips farmers with first-aid kits. 

This initiative reinforces the principle that immediate attention is crucial when livestock sustains injuries.

By championing sustainable practices and providing hands-on support, RADA is keen on steering the agriculture sector towards a future marked by resilience, productivity, and sustainability.
