Jamaican-American Broward County Commissioner and former county mayor Dale Holness announced on Monday evening that he is entering to District 20 congressional race to fill the vacancy created by the death of Congressman Alcee Hastings last week.

Although Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, whose responsibility it is, has not named a date for the elections, a crowded field of candidates are expected to compete for the seat which included portions of Palm Beach County and Broward County, and which Hastings held since 1992.

In announcing his candidacy, Holness, 64, was endorsed and supported by Hastings son Alcee “Jody” Hastings II who said, “My father and Dale shared a long friendship. Our family stands firmly behind Dale. ... Dale has the grit, perseverance, determination, the compassion, to continue his legacy fighting for justice and fighting for quality for all.”

Also present and offering their endorsement were Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis, Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony, Clerk of Courts Brenda Forman and Lauderdale Lakes Mayor Hazelle Rogers.

Another Broward Commissioner, Barbara Sharief announced her candidacy for the seat earlier this year. At least six other candidates including Florida Senator Perry Thurston and City of Miramar Wayne Messam are expected to contest the seat also. But, as for now, Holness is considered one of the leading contenders.

In announcing his candidacy Holness said, “ Following in the legacy of Congressman Alcee Hastings is not going to be easy….We’ve got a lot of work to do……I will work every day diligently to continue his legacy and build on it.”
