Jamaican artiste Capleton arrested on rape charges

Jamaica police have detained Clifton Bailey, the international artiste otherwise known as Capleton, as they continue their investigations into a rape incident.

Capleton’s attorney, Christopher Townsend, who accompanied the singer into the police station, said his client was questioned by detectives from the Centre for Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA).

He confirmed that Capleton, whose songs include “Jah Jah City, “The Day will Come” and “Good in her Clothes” had been charged with rape and attempted rape. “I can also confirm that there is also a dual investigation, because the young lady who made the report is also being investigated for extortion (against Capleton) so that investigation is ongoing.”

Capleton is due to appear in court on Monday and Townsend has been critical of the police in their handling of the matter.

The police report that the alleged rape victim who is a hairdresser, said that she was hired by the 51-year-old entertainer and went to a hotel in New Kingston on April 28 to groom his hair. According to the police, she claimed that while there the entertainer held her down and had sexual intercourse with her against her will.

The woman made a report to the police on May 2.
