Jamaica witnesses significant crime reduction in first quarter of 2024
The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) has announced a decline in major crime rates during the first quarter of 2024, illustrating progress in the fight against crime compared to the same timeframe in 2023.
A noteworthy decrease was observed in the rates of murders, shootings, and rape, highlighting the effective crime prevention measures undertaken by the law enforcement agency.
Property crimes and law enforcement efforts
The report also sheds light on property-related offenses, revealing a significant reduction in break-ins. However, the occurrence of robberies remained steady, with 171 incidents reported.
The diligent efforts of the JCF have not gone unnoticed, as there has been a rise in the arrests and charges related to major crimes, demonstrating a staunch commitment to accountability and justice for victims.
Strides in arms control
Commissioner of Police, Dr. Kevin Blake, emphasized the success in arms control, particularly in the confiscation of illegal firearms and ammunition.
The increase in gun and ammunition seizures represents the JCF’s intensified strategy to eliminate the tools that fuel violence on the streets. With legislative backing from the new Firearms Act, the focus on disarming criminals has never been sharper.
Looking ahead, the JCF plans to adjust its organizational structure to better combat illegal weapons trafficking.
