Jamaicans are being urged to prepare for showers and thunderstorms from Friday through Sunday, while parts of South Florida face coastal flooding risks as rainfall and high tides affect the region.

Jamaica’s Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) said Wednesday that a broad trough currently across the northwestern Caribbean is expected to move closer to the island by Thursday night.

The Meteorological Service of Jamaica forecasts periods of showers and thunderstorms, which may be heavy at times, across most parishes from Friday morning through Sunday, with eastern and central parishes expected to be particularly affected.

Fishers and other marine interests operating along the island’s north and south coasts, both inshore and offshore, have been advised to exercise caution as sea conditions are expected to deteriorate near showers, thunderstorms and squalls.

Meanwhile, the U.S. National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood advisory for Miami-Dade and Broward counties, warning of moderate flooding through 8 p.m. Saturday.

The advisory comes as rainfall and king tides are expected to affect South Florida. The weather service has also issued a rip current risk through Saturday evening and a high surf advisory for Palm Beach County.

The coastal flood advisory warns that flooding could affect roads, parks and other low-lying areas, potentially disrupting travel.

“If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth,” the weather service advised.

The agency also warned that heavy rainfall coinciding with higher astronomical tides could result in more significant coastal flooding.

Residents in both Jamaica and South Florida are encouraged to monitor official weather updates and take precautions as conditions develop.
