Jamaica Customs Agency achieves prestigious ISO Certification

The Jamaica Customs Agency (JCA) stands as a trailblazer, securing the distinguished ISO 9001:2015 certification from the National Certification Body of Jamaica (NCBJ).

This noteworthy achievement places Jamaica Customs in the limelight as the first English-speaking Customs administration to embrace and receive this global recognition.

Accreditation enhances agency’s efficacy and image

This new endorsement signifies the agency’s alignment with the gold standards of quality management systems recognized on an international scale.

The JCA’s recent accreditation is a testament to its enhanced capabilities in facilitating trade, managing revenue, and fortifying border protection.

Strengthening stakeholder confidence and operational proficiency

The attainment of ISO 9001:2015 certification underscores the JCA’s commitment to continuous improvement and excellence.

According to an article by JCA, CEO/Commissioner of Customs, Mrs. Velma Ricketts noted that the agency’s transformative journey has revamped its decision-making frameworks, operational procedures, communication strategies, and stakeholder engagement approaches, ensuring a robust and dynamic agency well-equipped to handle the complexities of modern customs administration.

Advancing towards a customer-focused future

Sean Barrow, the ISO Project Director, underscores the significance of the ISO standards within the operations of the Jamaica Customs Agency.

Adopting ISO principles is envisaged to reposition the agency as a more resilient and customer-focused entity. Such a transition is pivotal for reinforcing Jamaica’s stance on safety, and security, and elevating its competitive edge economically.

Streamlining for efficiency: Lower costs, higher standards

With ISO certification in place, Barrow explained that JCA is on the path to refining its operational processes and protocols to align with international benchmarks.

This alignment is projected to reduce transaction costs for businesses and investors, fostering an environment conducive to economic growth.

Quality service as a global standard

The path to ISO certification entailed evaluations, with the JCA emerging successfully from a two-stage certification audit led by the NCBJ.

This certification is more than just an accolade. It formally recognizes the high standard of Customs services in Jamaica and acts as an assurance of quality, efficiency, and compliance.
