Investing in women’s leadership: International Women’s Day 2024
March 8 will mark the annual celebration of International Women’s Day (IWD), a global event dating back to the early 1900s. This year, the spotlight is on the crucial importance of investing in the leadership of women and girls.
From bustling metropolises to remote villages, countries worldwide join in commemorating IWD, emphasizing the need for gender equality, equity, and socio-economic empowerment.
In Jamaica, the day will be celebrated under the theme ‘Investing in Women and Girls in Leadership to Accelerate Gender Equality, Equity, and Socio-economic Empowerment’.
Acknowledging women’s achievements
Addressing attendees at the IWD Commemorative Church Service on March 3, held at the Gregory Park Baptist Church in St. Catherine, Sharon Coburn Robinson, Principal Director of the Bureau of Gender Affairs, emphasized the significance of this day.
She highlighted the opportunity it presents to honor and celebrate the remarkable achievements of women across various spheres - social, economic, cultural, and political.
A time of expansion and transformation
Reflecting on the historical context, Robinson noted that the inception of IWD coincided with a period of global evolution and expansion.
She further remarked that the world was undergoing active population growth, coupled with a surge in radical and innovative ideologies, underscoring the profound changes shaping society.

The chosen theme underscores the myriad opportunities to applaud women in leadership roles, driving transformative change throughout Jamaican society.
Robinson emphasized that the progress in women’s leadership is a clear testament to the outcomes of investing in women.
She highlighted how such investment yields tangible results, showcasing the significant achievements made possible through supporting and empowering women.
Upcoming events
Looking ahead, another significant event is the IWD Banner Event, scheduled at The Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in New Kingston on Thursday, March 14.
With a lineup of distinguished speakers including Hon. Olivia Grange, Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment, and Sport, and Audrey Tugwell Henry, President and Chief Executive Officer of Scotia Group Jamaica Limited, the forum promises insightful discussions on advancing gender equality.
National recognition and engagement
Further activities are planned, including Minister Grange’s reading of the IWD National Statement in Parliament, alongside the symbolic pinning of purple ribbons on Parliamentarians and Senators on March 5 and 8.
