In Fort Lauderdale, officials urged residents to use caution while traveling and asked the public to report flooded roadways to the city.
The National Weather Service issued a flood advisory for Broward County through noon Thursday and warned motorists not to attempt to drive through flooded roads.
The wet conditions are being fueled by a stalled front combined with deep tropical moisture over South Florida, bringing periods of rain and thunderstorms throughout the day.
Forecasters said there could be some breaks in the rain around the evening commute, but the reprieve is not expected to last.
An upper-level low is expected to move over South Florida on Friday and remain a factor into the weekend, increasing the likelihood of additional showers and thunderstorms.
Rain chances are expected to remain elevated through the weekend and into next week, raising the possibility of additional flooding in areas where the ground is already saturated.
