Haitian American Edwin Raymond sworn in as New York City sheriff

Haitian American Edwin Raymond has officially taken office as New York City sheriff, becoming the latest leader of one of the nation’s oldest law enforcement agencies.

Raymond was sworn in during a ceremony at Brooklyn College, where New York State Attorney General Letitia James administered the oath of office. He assumed his duties on May 29, 2026, following his appointment by New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani.

As sheriff, Raymond will oversee the New York City Sheriff’s Office, the city’s chief civil law enforcement agency and the law enforcement division of the Department of Finance. The office is responsible for enforcing court orders and judgments, serving orders of protection, seizing illegal firearms and contraband, investigating deed and tax fraud, conducting tax enforcement and carrying out other duties related to public safety and the administration of justice.

Raymond’s appointment has drawn attention to his Caribbean heritage. He was born and raised in East Flatbush, Brooklyn, as the son of Haitian immigrants, and has highlighted how his upbringing shaped his approach to public service and community safety.

“Growing up in East Flatbush as the son of Haitian immigrants, I learned firsthand that keeping our working-class neighborhoods safe depends on trust in government and the institutions that serve our communities,” Raymond said.

“Throughout my career, I have been committed to public service and to strengthening the relationship between law enforcement and the people we serve. As sheriff, I will continue to lead with integrity, accountability, and fairness.”

Attorney General Letitia James praised Raymond’s commitment to transparency and public trust.

“Sheriff Edwin Raymond understands that public safety requires public trust, and he has always fought for the transparency and accountability our communities deserve,” James said. “I know that he will serve our city with integrity, compassion, and a deep commitment to justice.”

Mayor Mamdani also highlighted Raymond’s background and decades of service.

“Sheriff Edwin Raymond has dedicated his life to protecting the people of New York while bettering the institutions tasked with keeping us safe,” Mamdani said. “He grew up in East Flatbush, the son of Haitian immigrants. He became an NYPD officer to build bridges and write a new legacy. His life's work has been fighting for truth, justice, and safety.”

Raymond joins the sheriff’s office after a distinguished career in law enforcement. He is a retired lieutenant of the New York City Police Department, where he served for 15 years in various operational and leadership roles. During his NYPD career, he led Community Affairs for Patrol Borough Brooklyn North and was recognized for his work advancing integrity, accountability and community relations.

Before becoming sheriff, Raymond also served as Social Justice Liaison in the New York State Office of the Attorney General.

New York City Department of Finance Commissioner Richard Lee said Raymond’s experience in public safety and community engagement will strengthen the sheriff’s office.

“Sheriff Raymond comes to this role after a distinguished career in public safety, marked by an unwavering commitment to accountability, justice, and public trust,” Lee said. “We are fortunate to welcome a sheriff who appreciates both the rich history of this office and the responsibility of leading it into the future.”

The New York City Sheriff’s Office will continue overseeing civil enforcement operations, protecting consumers and businesses from fraud and illegal activity, and supporting citywide public safety efforts under Raymond’s leadership.
