Norway produced one of the biggest upsets of the FIFA World Cup on Sunday, toppling five-time champions Brazil 2-1 behind a clinical late brace from Erling Haaland to reach the quarterfinals for the first time in the nation's history.

The victory sends Norway into a July 11 quarter-final in Miami against England.

Nyland delivers goalkeeping masterclass

While Haaland supplied the finishing touch, goalkeeper Orjan Nyland laid the foundation for Norway's memorable triumph with a spectacular performance between the posts.

The veteran shot-stopper frustrated Brazil throughout the afternoon, beginning with a decisive first-half penalty save after Bruno Guimaraes was handed the chance to give the South Americans the lead.

Referee Ismail Elfath initially dismissed Brazil's appeals when Kristoffer Ajer brought down Matheus Cunha inside the area, but a VAR review overturned the decision.

Nyland, however, remained unfazed. Diving sharply to his left, he comfortably denied Guimaraes from the penalty spot before producing a string of outstanding saves to keep Norway level.

He stretched to divert Gabriel Martinelli's dangerous cross-shot away from an unmarked Guimaraes, then stuck out a leg to deny Vinicius Junior after Martin Odegaard had surrendered possession in a dangerous area.

Norway weathers Brazil's early pressure

Norway nearly made the perfect start when Patrick Berg found the net inside three minutes, only for the effort to be disallowed because of an offside infringement during the buildup.

Brazil steadily assumed control, creating the better opportunities, but repeatedly found Nyland in inspired form.

Haaland, largely contained for much of the opening half by Gabriel Magalhaes and Marquinhos, still fashioned Norway's best chance before the interval. Using his strength to unsettle Brazil's defense, he helped create space for Odegaard, whose effort was well saved by Alisson Becker.

Substitutions shift the momentum

Norway manager Stale Solbakken reshaped his attack at halftime by introducing Oscar Bobb and Andreas Schjelderup for Antonio Nusa and Alexander Sorloth.

Brazil responded with Endrick, who nearly made an immediate impact after Vinicius Junior threaded a superb outside-of-the-foot pass into his path. The teenager attempted to lift the ball over the advancing Nyland but failed to find the target.

Nyland's brilliance continued as he clawed away a powerful strike from Rayan before once again denying Guimaraes, although the latter opportunity was ultimately ruled offside.

The atmosphere intensified in the 67th minute when Neymar entered the match, drawing deafening cheers from Brazilian supporters hoping the veteran star could spark a turnaround.

Haaland seals a famous victory

Instead, it was Norway that finally broke through.

Schjelderup delivered an inviting cross from the left, and Haaland rose above Gabriel to thunder a header into the corner, igniting celebrations among the Norwegian players and supporters.

Brazil pressed desperately for an equalizer, but even fortune deserted them as Nyland produced a remarkable fingertip save to prevent Ajer from accidentally turning the ball into his own net.

Haaland then removed any lingering doubt in the 90th minute, drilling a low finish into the corner from the edge of the penalty area to score his second of the evening.

The brace lifted the prolific striker onto seven goals for the tournament, drawing him level with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe in the race for the Golden Boot.

Brazil’s wait continues

Brazil managed only a late consolation when Neymar converted a second penalty in the 10th minute of stoppage time after Casemiro was struck by an elbow in the area. The spot kick followed a brief confrontation between Neymar and Nyland before the Brazilian calmly converted.

The late goal could not alter the outcome.

For Brazil, who appointed Carlo Ancelotti in hopes of ending a 24-year World Cup title drought, the defeat marked another painful chapter. It was the sixth consecutive World Cup in which the Seleção were eliminated by European opposition and their earliest exit from the tournament since a 1-0 Round of 16 loss to Argentina in 1990.

Meanwhile, Norway celebrated a landmark achievement, powered by a world-class goalkeeping display and the clinical finishing of a striker who delivered when it mattered most.
