Guyana’s Liam Gordon aims for higher competition in CONCACAF Nations League

Guyana international Liam Gordon, a 28-year-old defender playing for Walsall in the English League 2 championship, has expressed his ambition for the Golden Jaguars to excel in their Group D, League B matches in the CONCACAF Nations League.

Gordon believes that securing a top position in their group and advancing to League A would provide valuable exposure to stronger competition.

In an interview on the Walsall website, Gordon explained, "We're in a group with Puerto Rico, Antigua & Barbuda, and Bahamas. We're in League B, so the winner of our group will go to League A, and play the likes of the United States, Panama, Jamaica, Costa Rica – the best teams in North America and the Caribbean."

He continued, "You would also qualify for the Gold Cup, which I was involved in back in 2019. We are top of our group, and we need a point to qualify, although I'm not sure if I read it correctly, but I don't think there is guaranteed qualification for the Gold Cup in 2025."

Guyana currently holds a six-point lead

Despite uncertainties, Gordon emphasized their determination, stating, "We're going to go with the same mindset, win these last two games and qualify for League A, make history again, and keep building because we have a great squad and a young squad so we have a great future."

Guyana currently holds a six-point lead in their group, needing only one point in their upcoming match against the Bahamas to secure promotion to League A. They will face Antigua & Barbuda three days later.

Gordon expressed pride in representing his country and the support from his club, Walsall, saying, "I get respect from the (Walsall) gaffer (Matt Sadler) that I am going away." He added, "We've got a good balance of people playing locally in Guyana, England, Canada, and America. We've got a lot of talented players, and it's my dream that some of them come over here to play."

Three Walsall players on international duty

Liam Gordon is one of three Walsall players, including Donervon Daniels and Brandon Comley, who will be on international duty during this week. Their scheduled match against Doncaster on Saturday was postponed due to the international break.

Gordon's teammates, Daniels and Comley, will represent Montserrat, aiming to secure wins in their Group B, League B matches when they host the Dominican Republic and Barbados.

Gordon expressed his excitement about the opportunity, saying, "It's an honor for all of us," and hopes for positive results as they return to club duties with Walsall after the international break.
