Grenada makes major crackdown on illegal firearms
In a significant move to combat gun violence, the Grenada police force has successfully confiscated over 25 illegal firearms within the first five months of the year.
The revelation came from Superintendent Esau Pierre, who heads the crimes and operations department.
This action is part of a broader initiative that also includes substantial drug seizures valued at over five million Eastern Caribbean dollars, underlining the force’s comprehensive approach to curtailing illegal activities.
Although Superintendent Pierre did not provide a comparable figure for the gun seizures, last year, the police seized 30 guns in total.
This year’s ongoing efforts indicate a strong and continuous commitment to reducing the availability of illegal weapons.
Gun amnesty initiative shows positive results
The introduction of a gun amnesty program by Prime Minister and Minister for National Security, Dickon Mitchell, in March has shown encouraging outcomes.
Several individuals have come forward to surrender their firearms, actively participating in the government’s efforts to address the issue of gun violence head-on.
Commitment to public safety
The police force remains dedicated to employing all resources at their disposal to address the surge in gun-related crimes.
This commitment is underscored by the unfortunate statistic of nine homicides recorded by May, with eight deemed murders.
Out of these, three were directly related to gun violence, leading to the arrest and charging of three suspects.
A broader look at gun-related crimes
Over a broader timeline from 2019 to 2023, Grenada’s authorities have seized a total of 68 illegal firearms.
The last two years have seen significant enforcement action, with 78 individuals arrested and charged for offenses related to firearms.
