Loop News- Officials at the Grenada Electricity Services Limited (Grenlec) are assessing the situation following a fire at the Beausejour Plant in the early hours of this morning which has caused an island-wide outage on one of Grenada’s sister isles - Carriacou.

In a statement, Grenlec says there were no injuries sustained during the incident.

While the fire was extensive, the Company is mobilizing resources to support the Carriacou Team in ascertaining the condition of the Plant.

Given the fire, there is an island-wide outage in Carriacou at present.

Company officials have apologized for the disruption in service, which comes as the Carriacou Maroon and String Band Festival and other activities get underway.

Grenlec states its priority is to restore electricity service in the quickest possible time.

Officials will provide more information upon completion of the assessment.

Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell, is out of the country and issued the following statement: “I received the sad news of the fire at the Grenlec Power Plant early this morning. Although I am currently off island, I wanted to let the people of Carriacou know that they are foremost in my thoughts and prayers.

We are in active contact with Grenlec to determine the extent of the damage and how quickly power can be restored.”

Meanwhile, Member of Parliament and Minister of Carriacou, Petite Martinique and Local Government, Tevin Andrews posted the following message early this morning: “Carriacou, unfortunately, we will be out of electricity for a while. The main Grenlec power station was damaged by fire earlier this morning. Let me use this opportunity to thank the hard-working firemen/policeman and Grenlec staff that assisted in controlling the fire.”
